At the 2025 Kumbh Mela, over 660 million people gathered at the sacred confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. They came to bathe in holy water, seeking to wash away sin and touch the divine. Yet, during those same weeks, scientists recorded alarming pollution levels in the Yamuna. Fecal coliform counts reached 92,000 units per 100 millilitres, about 37 times higher than the government’s safe limit.
